DAY 1: LONDOROSSI GATE TO MTI MKUBWA

  • Distance: 11km

Drive from Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Gate, where we will complete entry formalities. From here a forest track requiring one hour drive to Lemosho Glades. After lunch, we will walk along forest trails to Mti Mkubwa (big tree) campsite.

DAY 2: MTI MKUBWA TO SHIRA CAMP 1

We will follow a trail that leads out of the forest and into a savannah giant heather moorland zone. Our ascend through scenic rolling hills, we will cross several streams to reach the Shira Ridge before descending to Shira 1 camp. The view of Kibo from the plateau is spectacular.

DAY 3: SHIRA CAMP 1 TO SHIRA CAMP

A gentle walk across the plateau leads to Shira 2 camp on moorland meadows by a stream. A variety of walks are available on the plateau making this an excellent acclimatization day. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on Earth.

DAY 4: SHIRA CAMP 2 TO MOIR HUT

  • Distance: 5km
  • Hiking Time: 3-5 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland / Alpine Desert

Today we continue to Moir Hut, a little used site on the base of Lent Hills. A variety of walks are available on Lent Hills making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth.

DAY 5: MOIR HUT TO BUFFALO CAMP

  • Distance: 12km
  • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today we take moderately steep climb out of Moir Valley. You will have opportunity for small detour to climb the summit of Little Lent Hill at 4375m before returning to the Northern Circuit path. From here the route follows a series of inclines and declines, skirting around the northern slopes of Kibo to Buffalo Camp (4,020 meters).The trek gives great vistas out across the plains that lie north of Kilimanjaro and stretch out to the Kenyan / Tanzanian border. You will arrive at Buffalo Camp just after midday, where you will have lunch and have time to rest after a long day hiking.

DAY 6: BUFFALO CAMP TO THIRD CAVE

  • Habitat: High Alpine zone

As we head up Buffalo Ridge, and down to Porfu Camp where the lunch will be served. This route is rarely travelled and we will enjoy its mountain wilderness feel. We trek through remote valleys on to the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro until we arrive at Third Cave in the afternoon.

DAY 7: THIRD CAVE TO SCHOOL HUT

  • Distance: 15km
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: High Alpine zone

Today we take steady ascend over the Saddle, nested between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. The path leads further south-west toward School Hut, where you will be served with early dinner, after which you should get some sleep, because you will be awoken before midnight to start your summit attempt. Remember to prepare all your gear, including warm clothes, insulated water bottles, snacks, headlamp and camera before going to bed.

DAY 7: THIRD CAVE TO SCHOOL HUT

  • Distance: 6km (Descend distance 11km)
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours ascent and 4-6 hour descent
  • Habitat: Glacial zone and all preceding zones

You will be awoken around midnight and served with hot tea and biscuits, after the refreshment will begin the steep incline up the slopes of Kibo, under the cover of the night. The first check-point is Hans Meyer Cave where you will take a short break, and then climb steep to the Gilman’s Point (5681m. Take a moment to enjoy incredible view of Mawenzi Peak, before we start final 2 hours trekking to Uhuru Peak.

The slope flattens as we head west around the crater rim and should arrive at the summit at dawn. We will stay briefly at the top for you to get as many photos as you can of the incredible views and surrounding glaciers. We will then retrace our steps back around the crater rim to Stella Point, where we turn south and head down the heavily screed slopes of Kibo to Barafu Camp. After a short break here we continue down to Millennium Camp for your final night on the mountain. In total you will be trekking for 14-16 hours on day eight so it is important to pace yourself, remain hydrated and keep your blood sugar levels up.

DAY 9: MILLENNIUM CAMP TO MWEKA GATE

  • Distance: 6km (Descend distance 11km)
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours ascent and 4-6 hour descent
  • Habitat: Rainforest zone

Today the path descends steeply through the lush Mweka Rain Forest. The route follows the crest of a broad ridge separating two river valleys until it meets with a road that leads us for the last 40 mins to the Mweka Park gates where we stop for a well deserved picnic lunch where successful hikers will receive their summit certificates (gold for Uhuru Peak, green for Stella Point) from the Kilimanjaro National Park Authority. A vehicle will meet you at gate to drive you back to hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

    From the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east towards the peak of Kibo and passing that junction. Here our path goes east, towards the Lava Tower, also called the Shark’s Tooth. Shortly after passing the Lava Tower, we meet the second junction that brings us to the Arrow Glacier. From here we continue down to the Barranco Hut, where we will rest, have dinner and overnight. Despite the fact that we did not changed elevation from the point where we started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for the summit.

    DAY 5: BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP

    • Distance: 9km

    After breakfast, we take short scramble to the top of the Great Barranco and then a traverse over scree and ridges to the Karanga Valley, beneath the icefalls of the Heim, Kersten, and Decken Glaciers. After a short and well deserved break we leave Karanga and cross the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail, used for descend from the mountain later. From here we continue up to the Barafu Camp. Here we will rest, have dinner and prepare for the summit day. From Barafu you can enjoy the view of two volcanic cones Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, and that view is quite spectacular and you should not miss it.

    DAY 6: BARAFU CAMP TO SUMMIT TO MWEKA HUT

    • Distance: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent
    • Hiking Time:7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent
    • Habitat: Arctic

    An early start for the ascent to the rim of the Kibo Crater between the Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers. The last section before the rim can sometimes be snow-covered and an ice-axe or ski stick is useful for balance.

    At the rim we will reach Stella point, from where we have further hour to Uhuru Peak. After a short stop for taking photos we descend to the Barafu Hut for a rest and lunch before continuing on past Millenium camp down to Mweka Hut in the giant heather zone on the forest edge. Those with the strength left from the summit may wish to descend to the Reutsh Crater and visit the ice pinnacles of the Eastern Icefields. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

    DAY 7: MWEKA CAMP TO MOSHI/ARUSHA

    After breakfast, we continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. From the gate, you continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet you at village to drive you back to hotel in Moshi or Arusha.

      DAY 1: RONGAI GATE TO SIMBA CAMP

      Beginning our Kilimanjaro expedition, you will be driven from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi, embarking on a scenic 5-hour drive towards the Rongai Gate, situated near the Kenya border. Upon reaching the gate, we will proceed with the necessary registration process before embarking on our initial hike through captivating forests, where there is a strong possibility of encountering and enjoying the sights and sounds of wildlife.

      Along the hike, we will take a break to relish a satisfying lunch on the trail before continuing towards our first campsite. It is important to note that the Rongai Route takes us up the mountain’s northern side, which features a lower density of forests.The Rongai Route distinguishes itself from other options available on Kilimanjaro due to its comparatively lower amount of foot traffic, primarily because it requires a longer distance to reach the gate. It is widely recognized as the route that offers the highest chance of encountering wildlife during the journey.

      DAY 2: FIRST CAVE CAMP TO KIKELEWA CAMP

      On this day dedicated to acclimatization, you will experience a more relaxed schedule. The day begins with a morning hike, which is followed by a restful afternoon and evening. The hike itself is relatively brief but has steep inclines. The Mawenzi Tarn campsite, located beneath Mawenzi Peak, provides breathtaking vistas of both Mawenzi and Kibo campsite is situated below Mawenzi Peak and offers stunning views of both Mawenzi and Kibo.

      DAY 4: MAWENZI TARN CAMPSITE

      This is an acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn. We advise you hiking a bit higher this day before returning to Mawenzi Tarn in the afternoon.

      DAY 5: MAWENZI TARN CAMP TO KIBO CAMP

      Cross the lunar landscape of the saddle on this day to arrive at the final campsite. Kibo Camp is situated directly below the Kibo cone, giving you stunning uninterrupted views of your final destination.

      DAY 6: KIBO CAMP TO UHURU PEAK TO HOROMBO HUT

      At approximately midnight, commence the ultimate ascent towards Uhuru Peak, the highest summit in Africa. Over the next six hours, trek illuminated by the light of your flashlight. The journey to the rim of the crater presents the most demanding section of the entire trek, with the trail being exceedingly steep until you reach Gilman’s Point.

      Once you arrive at Gilman’s Point, the hike from there to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, in terms of hiking difficulty, relatively moderate. However, the high altitude adds length and fatigue to the hike. It typically takes around two hours to traverse the crater rim. Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, capture memorable photographs of your guide and group at the summit before commencing the descent towards Horombo Hut.

      DAY 7: HOROMBO HUT TO MARANGU GATE

After registering at the gate, we take the first hike through forests where you may see and hear wildlife. Eat lunch on the trail before continuing to the first campsite. Rongai ascends via the less forested northern side of the mountain.The Rongai Route is one of the least crowded routes on Kilimanjaro because of the long drive to the gate. The Rongai trail is thought to have the best chance of viewing wildlife.

        DAY 2: FIRST CAVE CAMP TO KIKELEWA CAMP

          Today’s route takes us to east, traversing a semi-desert and rocky landscape surrounding Lava Tower. Lunch will be served in a designated area before ascending the rocky path to Lava Tower. The descent to Barranco camp takes approximately 2 hours and provides excellent opportunities to capture beautiful photographs of the Western Breach and Breach Wall.

              Embark on a steep climb below the Heim Glacier, offering breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro. Proceed with a challenging ascent up the Great Barranco Wall, followed by a descent into the alpine desert of the Karanga Valley. Conclude the day with a steep climb to Karanga Camp.

              DAY 4: KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP

              Leave Karanga after breakfast and cross the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. Continue the ascent to Barafu Camp, where you’ll rest, have dinner, and prepare for the summit day. Enjoy the spectacular view of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks from Barafu.

              DAY 5: BARAFU CAMP TO UHURU PEAK TO MWEKA

              • Distance: 5km ascent, 11km descent
              • Hiking Time: 7-8 hours to Uhuru Peak, 6-8 hours to descend to Mweka Camp
              • Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit

              Start early for the ascent to the rim of the Kibo Crater, passing the Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers. The final section before the rim may be snow-covered. Reach Stella Point on the rim, followed by an additional hour to Uhuru Peak. Capture memorable photos before descending to Barafu Hut for rest and lunch. Continue past Millennium Camp, descending to Mweka Hut in the giant heather zone. If energy permits, visit the ice pinnacles of the Eastern Icefields. Enjoy a final dinner and a well-deserved rest.

              DAY 6: MWEKA CAMP TO MWEKA GATE (1800M)

              After breakfast, descend to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. From the gate, continue for another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will transport you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha

                DAY ONE

                • The distance: 7 km
                • Hiking time: 3 hours
                • Habitant: Montane Forest.

                Begin your adventure with a morning hotel pickup, driving to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate. After registration and final preparations, we ascend through the rainforest on a cleared trail. Spend the first night at Mandara Hut camp, surrounded by wooden A-framed huts and flush toilets.

                DAY 2: MANDARA HUTS TO HOROMBO HUTS

                • Distance: 12km
                • Hiking Time: 6 hours
                • Habitat: Moorland

                Depart from camp in the morning, trekking through forest and moorland, bypassing the Maundi Crater base. In the afternoon, we arrive at Horombo Hut, our overnight stay.

                DAY THREE

                Take a day to acclimatize gradually to the altitude at Horombo Hut. Explore the surroundings, including a popular walk to the base of Mawenzi Peak, the striking eastern summit of Kilimanjaro. This walk lasts 4-5 hours round trip, reaching an altitude of 4048m before returning to the hut. Enjoy an overnight stay with breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided.

                DAY FOUR

                Continue our ascent into the Alpine desert zone, heading to Kibo Hut. Prepare for the summit by having an early dinner and organizing personal gear. Rest before embarking on the summit trek, which begins around midnight.

                DAY FIVE: KIBO HUT SUMMIT TO HOROMBO HUT

                • Hiking Time: 6-7 hours
                • Habitat: Stone screed and ice-capped summit and Moorland

                Awakened around 23:30pm, we start the final summit push after a hot breakfast. The trail starts with a rocky path to Hans Meyer point (5250m), followed by a zigzag ascent to Gillman’s point (5681m) on the crater rim. This section is steep and covered with scree. From Gillman’s Point, snow may be encountered all the way to Uhuru Peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. After capturing photos at the summit, we begin the 3-hour descent back to Kibo Hut. After a short rest, we pack our personal gear and trek down to Horombo Hut (3 hours). This marks our last night on the mountain.

                DAY SIX

                • Habitat: Montane Forest

                Commence the final descent to Marangu Gate, our starting point. Enjoy lunch and receive your summit certificate as a commemoration of your remarkable achievement. We will then drive you back to your hotel, bidding you farewell.
